Curriculum

Our Vision for Learning

At Brannel School, our curriculum is designed to give every pupil the knowledge, confidence and character they need to thrive. We want our pupils to leave us as successful learners, thoughtful citizens and ambitious young people who are ready for the next stage of their education, training and lives.

We believe that every child is capable of achieving more than they first think possible. Our role is to open doors for pupils by giving them access to powerful knowledge, rich experiences and the personal skills needed to succeed in a changing world. This means setting high expectations for all pupils, while providing the support, structure and encouragement they need to meet them.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that pupils build strong foundations over time. In each subject, pupils learn the key knowledge, concepts, vocabulary and skills that help them understand the world more deeply and make meaningful connections between ideas. Learning is not left to chance: teachers plan deliberately so that pupils can revisit important knowledge, strengthen their understanding and become increasingly confident in applying what they know.

High-quality teaching is central to our vision. Lessons are built around clear explanation, guided practice, checking for understanding and independent thinking. Teachers use assessment carefully to identify what pupils know, where misconceptions exist, and what needs to happen next. This allows us to adapt teaching so that all pupils, including those who need additional support or challenge, can make strong progress.

We also believe that education is about more than exam results. Through our curriculum, personal development programme and wider school culture, pupils learn how to communicate well, work hard, think critically, act with integrity and contribute positively to their community. We want pupils to develop the habits and values that will help them succeed not only at school, but throughout their lives.

Our aim is simple: to ensure that every pupil at Brannel experiences a broad, ambitious and well-taught curriculum that helps them achieve their best and prepares them for a future full of possibility.

An Inclusive Curriculum

Our curriculum at Brannel School is inclusive, accessible, and ambitious for every learner. We recognise that all young people have individual strengths and needs, and our approach is centred on understanding and anticipating those needs so that barriers to learning are removed. This ensures that every learner can access a broad, balanced, and carefully sequenced curriculum that enables them to succeed.

In the spirit of the Equality Act 2010, we foster a culture of inclusion, support, and respect across our school community. We are committed to ensuring that every learner feels valued, supported, and able to thrive both academically and personally. Further information can be found in our Accessibility Plan.

In line with the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014 and the SEND Code of Practice: 0–25 years, we regularly assess the needs of our learners and carefully plan the most effective support to help them succeed. We work closely with families, staff, and external agencies to ensure appropriate provision is in place and continually review its impact on learners’ access to the curriculum and wider school life. Our Curriculum Structure

At Brannel School, we split our curriculum into two stages, Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.

Years 7, 8 & 9  – Foundations, Connections and Readiness

n Years 7 to 9, pupils at Brannel School follow a broad, ambitious and carefully sequenced curriculum designed to build the knowledge, confidence and habits they need for future success.

Year 7 focuses on foundations: helping pupils secure essential knowledge, vocabulary, routines and confidence as they move into secondary school. Year 8 focuses on connections: supporting pupils to deepen their understanding, make links across ideas and subjects, and understand knowledge in context. Year 9 focuses on readiness: enabling pupils to think more critically, apply what they know with increasing independence, and prepare for the demands of Key Stage 4.

Across Key Stage 3, our curriculum helps pupils grow academically, personally and socially, giving them access to powerful knowledge and preparing them to achieve more than they first thought possible.

Parents and carers have the right to withdraw their child from part or all Religion and World Views lessons. If you would like to discuss this further or request withdrawal, please contact the school directly via our enquiries email address.

Years 10 & 11 – Expertise, Independence and Future Pathways

In Years 10 and 11, pupils at Brannel School build on the strong foundations developed in Key Stage 3 and study their chosen subjects in greater depth. Our Key Stage 4 curriculum is ambitious, carefully sequenced and designed to help every pupil develop the knowledge, confidence and independence needed for success at GCSE and beyond.

Pupils are supported to think more like subject specialists: applying knowledge with precision, using subject-specific vocabulary accurately, making informed judgements, and developing the skills needed to perform well in formal assessments. Alongside this, we help pupils build the habits of resilience, organisation and self-reflection that are essential for future learning, employment and life beyond school.

Breadth of choice is central to our Key Stage 4 offer. Pupils are guided to make informed curriculum choices that reflect their strengths, interests and aspirations, while keeping future pathways open. Our aim is to ensure that every pupil follows a curriculum that is both ambitious and meaningful for them.

Across Key Stage 4, we want every pupil to leave Brannel academically prepared, personally confident and ambitious for their future.
